Marijuana has been stigmatized for years. The word “stoner” carries a negative connotation, evoking imagery of a lazy dimwitted stereotype. Like most things in life, the ridicule of cannabis stems from a lack of education or understanding of the plant itself. Things are changing in the second decade of the 21st century. Numerous studies have pointed to marijuana’s health benefits. Mainstream press outlets such as CNN and NBC have done extensive reports exploring the complexity of the beloved plant. Recently, the states of Washington and Colorado legalized marijuana, not just medically, but recreationally. In total, there are 21 states (as well as the District of Columbia) that allows some form of legal marijuana consumption. The times are changing. People are starting to realize that marijuana users are from all walks of life- that they are intellectuals, musicians, artists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, students, and grandparents. The fact that not a single fatality has been reported directly related to cannabis consumption speaks for itself.

Marijuana is used holistically, to treat pain, to treat menstrual cramps, to stimulate an appetite, to de-stress ; it’s just as useful recreationally as it is medicinally. The negative images attached to pot are linked to its overuse or those who can’t handle it (similar to alcohol). It’s most effective when used in moderation. However, patients with serious ailments might have to treat themselves daily with pot. Cannabis has proven to be a much safer and effective alternative to pharmaceutical medication. But of course, pharmaceutical companies are a part of the corporate America apparatus that want nothing more than to uphold marijuana’s prohibition. The criminalization of marijuana is also big business for the owners of private prisons, prompting law enforcement to target and profile people of color (particularly black males) at a disproportionately higher rate than their white counterparts.

We’re closer to full legalization in the United States than we’ve ever been before. Just as there is a culture of wine enthusiasts and beer lovers, there is a cannabis subculture that’s expanding to more mainstream territory. This 4/20 was the first in U.S. history when recreational tokers could buy legal pot from marijuana dispensaries and light up without legal repercussion. To celebrate the infamous stoner holiday, listen to 420 FM – an epic 4 hour, 20+ minutes compilation of colorful music and sounds.
