A Little Background on Poetic Justice

  • It was written and directed by John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood, Higher Learning, Four Brothers), released in 1993.
  • A Tribe Called Quest rapper, Q-Tip, appears as Janet Jackson’s love interest at the beginning of the film.
  • Regina King, voice of Huey and Riley Freeman on The Boondocks, plays Janet’s best friend in the film.
  • Janet Jackson’s team allegedly demanded that Tupac take an HIV/AIDS test before any kissing scenes were filmed. Tupac said that he was offended by the gesture and that they should ask Janet for one as well. Singleton claimed in a 2011 interview with Vibe that it was all a publicity stunt.
  • The film is based in my hometown of South Los Angeles.
  • Dr. Maya Angelou corrected an angry cursing Tupac on the set of the film, telling him “Do you know how important you are? When was the last time anybody told you or reminded you that our people stood on auction blocks so that you could live today? Somebody in your background decided they would stay alive despite this. They laid in the filthy hatches of slave ships to stay alive so that they would have some descendants. And here you are. You’re more valuable than you can imagine.”
  • Ice Cube was offered the role of Lucky before Tupac.
  • Tupac Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas three years later.
  • Janet on Tupac in 2010:

‘Pac was just silly,’ Jackson says of the late rapper, who was shot dead in Las Vegas three years after the film’s release. ‘He was completely different from what people knew. ‘Not that it was an act, the person that the world knew, because that was him, too. I adored him; he liked to play and laugh. ‘I remember when he said he was going back into LA to get a tattoo. And, I said, “Why are you going to LA? We’re not supposed to leave, we have to shoot tomorrow.” ‘He looked at me and said, “Square!’ she says, laughing. ‘When he came back he showed me the tattoo he got on his stomach. He was sweet. Granted, there was another side, but he wouldn’t just snap or go crazy out of nowhere. There had to be something that triggered that. I miss him,’ she says softly. [The Telegraph, 11/22/10]
