The Cool Kids- When Fish Ride Bicycles (Album Review)

August 11, 2011

Micro Album Review

The long-awaited highly-anticipated debut studio album from Chicago/Detroit-based hip-hop duo The Cool Kids is a fun bass-heavy ride that last only for 39 minutes. Chuck Inglish’s production has gotten more sophisticated, showing the essential growth made since The Bake Sale (released in 2008). The Neptunes produced two songs on the album (“Get Right” and “Summer Jam”), while Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker co-produced one, (“Sour Apples”). The album have very few dull moments, but even those dull moments are far more interesting than most of the output from their peers. Highlights on the album include guest appearances from Ghostface Killah on “Penny Hardway” and Asher Roth on standout track “Roll Call” which mildly echoes A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario” and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Key tracks: “Sour Apples” (feat. Travis Barker) ~ “Penny Hardway” (feat. Ghostface Killah) ~ “Roll Call” (feat. Asher Roth, Chip Tha Ripper & Boldy James)
