Animal Collective: 40 Greatest Songs

April 12, 2011

Experimental music is so far left in the margin that even many alternative music fans find it hard to swallow. Some artists incorporate experimental elements into their music, some base their entire careers off of an avant-garde approach to music. For 11 years thus far, Animal Collective has released some of the most innovative and invigorating music in recent history. It crafts songs from a rhythmic collection of sounds and abstract noises. Animal Collective is so adored by an underground audience because rather focusing on churning out soulless pop hits, its focus is on producing pure art. Its music is primal, serene, boisterous, quirky, beautifully eclectic. It is an acquired taste, but a flavor worth savoring. The band and its members as solo artists (Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist) are forerunners in the contemporary psychedelic movement in alternative music today. Below is a thorough selection of 40 songs believed to be of its greatest accomplishments, from ambient pieces that exceeds 10 minutes to more pop-friendly melodies that helped further popularize the band.

very intriguing list that does all it can to contrast the wide variety of sounds animal collective has managed to achieve. there’s a lot of nods at so many of my favorites (‘could win a rabbit’, ‘bluish’, ‘for reverend green’, ‘the purple bottle’ to name a few).

but curiously, my favorite animal collective song of all time, ‘safer,’ did not make the list. do you not care for this track or is it just outside the top 40?
