Hipsterrunoff is Racist Y’all

September 9, 2010

A pathetic attention-whore masquerading as an alternative subculture bro manages to attract a considerably decent amount of readers while passing off white supremacy in a post-ironic pseudo-satirical manner. Carles is his name. His ignorance and immaturity have even ruffled the feathers of popular indie artists Best Coast and Neon Indian. But like other online media outlets, people without talent love to nit-pick at those that do have talent because it makes them feel better in their own delusional minds.

The racists posts however are beyond irony and i urge the blogosphere to take a stand against it [via sending Carles hatemail/death threats and reblogging and tweeting this]

Carles can be contacted here: carleser@gmail.com

Anonymously, Carles is known to respond to readers under aliases in the comment section. Yours truly had to go-in on a bitch:

@CaliAltBro, Walking down the street 2nite a black guy asked me if I ‘got high’ nd three homeless minoritees tried 2 bum dolla billz off of me. Span of about 1 quarter mile. Kinda feel like overexposing the shit out of my ‘cultural awakening,’ editing out teh bad parts and putting it 2 some shoegaze right nao 2 show how ‘post racial’ I am.

@Bromosexual, Walking through Western history for the past 400 years i came across an entire genocide inflicted upon Native Americans on their home territory by pale foreigners, over 300 years of the slavery and brutal systematic oppression of Africans, Asians being forced in concentration camps, and going into middle-eastern countries to blow up the brown sand-dwellers…
Damn, maybe I can edit out all those bad-parts and create a lame blog where i can simultaneously cash-in on alternative culture, exploiting the hell out of it, diss the coloreds, and try to pass it off as irony so my white brothers can agree, and try my best to be relevant all at the same time! 🙂

The Swag Express doesn’t have to use any lame gimmicks or alternative identities to interact with its audience. The Swag Express is all about unity, peace, understanding and justice.

The Swag Express stands against all forms of racism and bigotry. The Swag Express believes just because a Klan member dresses up like an “alt-bro” and listens to indie rock and have a pathetic little blog to exploit that subculture doesn’t mean that he can’t be the same breed of bigot that runs in skin-head circles.

All black artists or people mentioned on HipsterRunoff are treated like a subspecies/subhuman other… Carles writes with an elitist arrogance that is carried by many younger Caucasians who hold contempt against people of color. Every post about a person of color, especially blacks, is used as an US vs THEM tactic to insult their character and being in every way that he can and to question whether they are worthy to to be taken seriously or to mingle with their white counterparts.

Many followers seem to be just as pathetic and delusional as Carles, co-signing his ignorance in their micro-sphere of pretentious blogging. Few speak out against his posts and take a more rational stand.

The Swag Express doesn’t support bigotry y’all.

One of the points of HRO is that all artists and their art, and everyone who brushes “celebrity,” regardless of color, are rendered commodities. If anything, HRO shines a light on racism that eludes many people. While it does use racist tactics, calling it racist strikes me as a little like calling Jonathan Swift anti-Irish. Not that it’s on that level, but, hey, it’s a blog.

Then again, when you encourage death threats and then say you’re all about peace, I don’t know…maybe you’re being “post-ironic” too. Where does the irony end?

Yes, and let me make it clear to all readers that the “death threats” comment was sarcasm, but i find it more unsettling that some people would defend this kind of behavior. There is nothing enlightening about it. The more complacent people are with ignorance, the further we move away from progression.

Okay, so you didn’t literally mean “death threats.” I’d imagine you were also hyperbolizing when you compared Carles & HRO commenters to klansmen or Glenn Beck. In other words, you didn’t mean exactly what you said.

The same is true at HRO, and that’s why it rings hollow when you use words like “ignorance.” The attempts at over-the-top self-awareness and post-irony are undeniable. If you want to maintain the argument that those things don’t matter, that they still breed hatred or racism, that’s certainly something to consider, but I don’t think it’s coming from a place of ignorance. I commented in your other post about my own experience with HRO’s P-Nut post, so I won’t rehash that, but I do think there’s something illuminating, if not enlightening, about HRO’s posts about race and nationality.

Sure, some people read it literally and either feel attacked or feel like their hatred has been validated, but I think both are unfortunate, unintended consequences of satire.

HRO is plain, old-fashioned satire delivered in contemporary, post-everything style.

I read hipster runoff because it’s funny sometimes and once in a blue moon it hits a nerve in a profound way. I’m not ‘white’. Word on the street is, neither is Carles. You should pay attention to how sharp his knife is when he talks about ‘white people’.

A person certainly doesn’t have to be Caucasian to have racist tendencies

The commenters here are spot-on. The whole schtick of HRO is to basically take on the character of a hipster, but make him childishly earnest in seeking hipster credibility, and in doing so voicing a lot of ridiculous, generally unspoken rules and behaviors of hipster/indie culture. It is a mixture of satire and absurdism. It satirizes the ultra-whiteness of hipsters, including what may be casually racist attitudes from them. Anything satirizing that on the site really comes off as simply that, pure satire. It’s not the same as the unfortunately now too-common schtick of other media/entertainment, where they make flat-out racist/sexist/prejudiced comments under a guise of irony, when there really is no commentary, wit or any layers to their humor that can possibly make the claim of irony true. HRO, on the other hand, does stand up to that scrutiny. LR is right when he/she says “If you want to maintain the argument that those things don’t matter, that they still breed hatred or racism, that’s certainly something to consider, but I don’t think it’s coming from a place of ignorance.” I’m open to a good argument about why satire may still breed those attitudes, while I may not necessarily agree with it in the case of HRO, but it’s unfair to flat-out call it racist or something as extreme as white supremacist (hyperbole or not – for me, this and the abortion joke masquerading as ‘humor’ stand up less to scrutiny than anything I’ve read on HRO, because they are not only jokes I personally don’t find ironic/funny – mostly because they lack nuance and any clever, layered meaning and partly because they are just tasteless – but are also, unlike HRO, jabs made in genuine anger).

That’s not a hipster. White liberal hipster freaks are all about prattling about “white privilege” and how politically correct they are.
